A Mint Julep Worthy of Your Fanciest Hat
Jul. 12, 2016
The Kentucky Derby may only happen once a year (sadly for fans of horse-racing and over-the-top hats!) but one of the best things about the annual event is the Mint Julep. Luckily, it’s a cocktail that has relevance and appeal far beyond the two minutes or so it takes for the equine du jour to make its way around the track.
This spin on the traditional Kentucky classic infuses fresh mint, simple syrup and ample crushed ice with crisp Patrón Silver. All you need is a fascinator and you’ll be off to the races.

Silver Julep
- 2 oz Patrón Silver
- .5 oz simple syrup
- 7-10 mint leaves
- Crushed ice
- + Mint sprig for garnish
Muddle mint and simple syrup in the bottom of a julep cup and add tequila. Fill with crushed ice and stir until a frost forms on the outside of the cup. Top with additional crushed ice and garnish with a sprig of mint. If you don’t have a julep cup, make the cocktail in a rocks glass.
